I'm a journalist and I was wondering whether anyone who works at Trader Joe's (or indeed any other supermarket) might help me with a story I am working on on expired foods. I'm looking for information on how stores treat outdated food. What do they do with it, how do they dispose it and whether they just relabel it and sell it to unsuspecting customers.
I'd be really grateful for any insights!
Thanks

I am a bit concerned about this product as it does not state it's CFUs (Colony forming units) and states nothing about "live" cultures vs dead bacteria. It does state that it contains "4 Billion Organisms at time of Manufacture". However, this does not guarantee that these organisms are alive. The bottle also states that it should be stored in a cool, dry place. I do know that Trader Joe's looses a lot of the quality of many of their products due to their methods for transporting their products. Often their produce is old and moldy (due to not being refrigerated and sitting too long on their docks or at the store's docks before being put away correctly. I often need to return bad milk - even though the date on the carton is not yet reached.)

Therefore, I am concerned that this Probiotic product is not what it appears to be on the title. Due to the unfair labeling laws in this country it is easy for vitamin manufacturers to deceive buyers into buying products that are not really what is stated on the label. You must study the labeling laws to know how to read consumer labels on products.

I suspect that this product does not contain live cultures and that after the time of manufacture the culture dies. If you research these Probiotic products elsewhere you will find that many of them do state the CFUs and that it contains live cultures.

I would really appreciate a statement by the company to clear this. However, I do not believe that Trader Joe's is actually in the vitamin business and therefore is not concerned with being clear. I am sure that they purchase their vitamin line from a different company - and we know nothing about them. They are just a grocery store who is more concerned with their sales volume and not the quality of their vitamins. They are also not a health food store which sometimes has better quality vitamins. I have been told by people who study vitamins and supplements and by plumbers that one of the worst drain clogging substances there are - are the undissolved vitamin tablets that just pass through whole and do not actually break down in our systems. I understand that virtually all the cheap vitamins do this.

I think we are deceived by Trader Joe's low priced vitamins. We need to research farther before we deem them REAL vitamins and nutrients.

So, the other night, I saw a jar of 'satay peanut sauce' or something - it is a short widemouth jar. Any chance it is close to the TJ's peanut sauce (in a salad dressing shaped bottle) that they discontinued a few years ago? I've had some good luck with making my own out of half a jar of plain hoisin sauce, adding about an equal amount of smooth peanut butter, and a dash of ginger, lemon juice and water if needed to thin it out more.
I have extremely low tolerance of spicy hot, so I'm leary of using things labeled Thai or Indian, cuz there's usually added peppery spice in those.

I bought it, just in case. I'll post a review when I try it. Then again, I bought a jar of pesto sauce about 3 years ago, and THAT is still in my cupboard. I'm so inquisitive in the store, but boring at the stove. ;-)

i had meant to complain to the skipper, but since this guy was right next to the skipper, i felt a bit shy... and it occurred to me that maybe they already know he is trouble and put him close to the skipper so he could be observed. of course, he was texting right there anyway, so maybe the skipper is oblivious...

should i call and complain? or just realize that texting while working with money and customers is just normal business transaction these days?

My roommate works there and loves it. I have many years of retail experience and spent a LONG time on my resume and cover letter to make sure it "wows" the trader joe recruits. I was just wondering frmo those who have done it, what it was like, and what the application process was like? For instance, how many interviews, what are they looking for? I know its a lot of hours and random hours but working long and hard has never been an issue for me, if I love my job, i could do it all the time. Ive done work like this before and love it much more than my other office jobs.

2ND CHARLOTTE LOCATION TO OPEN IN 4TH QUARTER
Trader Joe's almost ready
1st store in Charlotte will open Aug. 17 in Piper Glen
KATHLEEN PURVIS
kpurvis@charlotteobserver.com

The wait is almost over for fans of Trader Joe's. The first Trader Joe's in Charlotte, at the Shops in Piper Glen, 6418 Rea Road, will open Aug. 17, says company spokeswoman Alison Mochizuki.

The 12,500-square-foot store will kick off with a "lei cutting" (Trader's version of a ribbon cutting) at 8:45 a.m., and the store will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Store workers are bracing for crowds. The opening of a Trader Joe's usually brings long lines of fans, eager to stock up on products like simmer sauces, salsas and frozen potstickers.

Mochizuki said the second Charlotte location, at 1820 Arbor Drive near Mallard Creek Church Road, is expected to open in the fourth quarter. And while the company gives few details about future projects, she said Trader Joe's still is interested in a midtown location closer to uptown Charlotte.

The first Trader Joe's in the Carolinas opened in Cary, outside Raleigh, last year.

Based in Monrovia, Calif., Trader Joe's is a specialty food store with a wide variety of items, from salsas to granolas, frozen foods and candies. The company often uses small, artisan producers. In a typical Trader Joe's, more than 80 percent of the products are exclusive. It aims at nutrition niches, such as gluten-free, kosher, vegetarian and vegan products.

Trader Joe's is privately held, so it provides no information on sales. But Supermarket News estimated the company had sales of $5 billion in 2006. The company is owned by a German trust created by Aldi co-founder Theo Albrecht.

The south Charlotte store will have a beer and wine section, so fans can buy the popular Charles Shaw wines, although "Two Buck Chuck," nicknamed because it sells for $1.99 a bottle in California, usually costs $2.99 in East Coast stores.

> > POSTED: 11:44 am PDT June 20, 2007
> >
> > UNDATED -- Gills Onions LLC announced Wednesday it was recalling diced
> > yellow onions carrying the Trader Joe's name because they could be
> > contaminated by Listeria monocytogenes.
> > Health officials said Listeria was a microorganism that can cause serious or
> > fatal infections in children, the elderly or those with weakened immune
> > systems. It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant
> > women. Healthy adults can experience symptoms including fevers, severe
> > headaches, nausea and diarrhea.
> > The onions were sold to consumers in 10-ounce bags labeled with the Trader
> > Joe's brand name in Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon and
> > Washington.
> > The onions were also sold to food service companies in 20-pound cartons
> > labeled as Gills Onions Brand and Sysco Natural Brand. All the packages are
> > printed with a best-if-used-by date of "06/16/07" and a lot number "2017-R."

I like to get them once in a while as a different treat for us. (my 4 yr. old and I).
We mostly treat on fruits and sometimes chocolate sorbet sometimes even on some horribly good but rich chocolate croissant (lucky to have this amazing bakery that reminds me so much of my France experience...so perfectly made...) but those date coconut rolls are fun to have around, now yes I do get once in a while some dates, plain dates, soo yummmyyyyy.
So, do any of you know or have an idea of how those are made?
Merci!
I was at my parents' house for Christmas and I was repacking my boxes (I am living abroad currently) and I found my TJ cloth bag that I used for painting...it was so beautiful...and reminded me of TJ's...

...le sigh...unfortunately there is no TJ's near my parents' or else I would have shopped there while stateside...

...now I'm back to no TJ's at all.

Shop some for me, folks!

Love, peace and hugs,
Halcyon

The Meyer lemon one I've sprinkled dry over top of a package of frozen blueberries, and baked like a crumble. Brightly lemon, maybe a bit too sweet. The fudge truffle one - oh, very chocolatey and rich. And the plain Yellow mix, I think I baked as a regular cake, but found it greasy and bland; next time I'll try to cut the amount of butter - nobody needs a full stick in a mix that only makes an 8X8 pan.

K so I'm sure that everyone knows that ALDI is a German company that owns TJ's.. I went into an ALDI store today in Indiana and I was underwhelmed. Yes, the prices are ok, however after seeing all the chemicals and preservatives on the food labels FOR THE SAME PRICE AS WHAT YOU FIND AT TJ"S, it seems strange that this store is so popular for discount groceries.

Perhaps it's just about location:

From the Wikipedia entry on ALDI:

In the United States, Aldi often locates its stores in areas with cheap property, which is often synonymous with proximity to high concentrations of impoverished minorities. Aldi stores in many US States accept public assistance debit-style cards as payment. The US perception of minorities being responsible for violent crime, as well as the not unfounded perception of these neighborhoods sometimes being violent often helps keep more affluent customers away.

Has anyone ever shopped at an ALDI before? What's your impression?
