  I know a Safeway in Arizona just relabeled nearly expired meat then discounted it with an "in store" special. I suspect others do too, but with the way TJ's packages their food, I would be surprised that they would do something like that.
  
  I know many chains have secondary outlets, some have pantry's they give food to.

    Trader Joe's has no "secondary outlets." They pull nearly expired food from their shelves daily and donate it to local charities. This is a verifiable fact.

      I work at TJs, and every night one of us goes through all the dated items, and pulls the days "spoils" off the shelves. We donate all the non refrigerated items to a local shelter. Unfotunately the refrigerated things can't be donated due to food, and health rules in our area. In the past we did donate them, but the shelters in our ares had trouble picking it up on time, and we have almost no room for the fresh stuff that comes in every day.

        That's good to hear that the workers try to pull off the foods that have reached their expiration date. Where I've shopped they miss items, however. I always check dates now since I've come home with expired dates on several occasions.
        
        I am glad the non refrigerated expired items get donated when possible.

  I've see past date canned/dry goods in dollar stores and outlets.
  No Trader Joe's branded stuff, though.
