Annies "Goddess Dressing", replaced with another Trader Joe's copy.

      Pepperoncini

Hopefully those huge bottles of maples syrup are just temporarily out of stock

It's my belief that the TJ's dressing is really Annie's with TJ's label...it happens sometimes. TJ's fights hard to get low prices and sometime national brands don't want to have their name associate with cheap/affordable things so they will offer it to TJ but repackage it.

        I could be wrong.

It's true! The TJ's brand beer is actually Gordon Biersch, except it cost $2 less per 6-pack. My German husband was thrilled when he tried the TJ's brand I bought for him...and when he told the store manager how much he liked it, the manager confided in the beer behind the TJ's label.

This is a serious old skool TJ's thing, but I miss the bags of unsweetened carob chips.

And the unsweetened coconut flakes they were carrying more recently.

      FRESH MARGARITA MIX!!!

      Argh!!! There is no substitute.

      Patron check
Cointreau check (although that new patron stuff that tj's carries is a nice cheap substitute)
      Limes AND Lemons check
mix :( (once you take that stuff out of the picture, they are all the same)

Naturade Vegetable Protein is great for vegetarians who want a powder that tastes good and has a good amino acid profile.

I have to go to another store to buy the stuff now.

Yes. They replaced one of the few salad dressings I can eat:
    Annie's Seasame/Shittake
with the inferior Joe label type. Trust me. It is more than a label swap. Give us our Annie's back!

Speaking of the inferior Joe label type, they also replaced Seventh Generation dish soap with a Trader Joe's version that just isn't the same. Wish they'd bring back the Seventh Generation--I hate having to pay almost $4 for a bottle of it at Whole Foods.

The low-fat Pumpkin Cranberry tea loaf is back--in San Francisco anyway. I saw some on the shelf at the Bay St. location last night. Incidentally, TJS sells these 3-packs of Belgian chocolate bars at the checkout stands, but they never seem to have the white chocolate with crisped rice bars anymore. Does anyone know whether they're gone for good or whether the stores just can't keep them in stock?

Has Trader Joe's stopped carrying the Mario Batali pasta sauces? I haven't seen them in my local stores for weeks and weeks now.

Mario's Sugo di Pomodoro was the best, most versatile quick base sauce around. I'll be crushed if I can't find it anymore! :-(

My roommate was ruined by the Thai Peanut sauce
being discontinued. I was standing in the aisle the other day and I overheard the employees listing off all the stuff they had just discontinued... I heard something else about a lemon muffin mix?

Fortunately my TJ's has a "New arrivals" display. That sorta makes up for some of the stuff going missin'.

Anyone had the Priga Kahn (sp?) frozen Thai beans? OMG, so yummy...

sheesh, maybe all of your TJ's has been gettin those canned dolmas from Greece for years (which I do like, most of the time--sometimes though, I will get a can where the dolmas ain't so good), but like 6 months ago TJ's came out with a TJ's brand in a jar, and they were awesome--but they are no more.

    • Re: Say It Ain't So, Joe!

      Sun, October 16, 2005 - 12:50 PM
I can relate to your devastation after TJ's discontinued the Chipotle Sauce...my son told me a few months ago, "Do NOT let us EVER run out of this stuff..." I bought 8 bottles and luckily we still have a couple left!

I've worked at TJ's for about a year and it's frustrating to the employees, as well as the customers, when something is discontinued.
Items get "discontinued" for several reasons...
      -slow sales
      -supplier problems
-the product is seasonal and limited supply
-change of label...ie. label becomes TJ, but product is made by the same company...
-sometimes it's a shipping problem and the product is not discontinued. Be sure to ask about the product that is MIA on the shelves...it may be expected back very soon!

Be sure to get the Customer Service number and call them if you want a product back. If enough people request it, sometimes a product comes back!

Also...be sure to let the management (or customer service) know about products you LOVE...and employees that have helped you...it's always nice to hear the good comments, too! :-)

No Cocoa! Little tins of Dutch exquisiteness? Oh... this is a sad day for my baking plans..... you haven't experienced the rush of Christmas sugar til you've tried one of my cocoa frosted marshmallow cookies. Only made once a year, cause they are a PAIN! Van Houten is so much better than Hershey's! Good thing I still have half a can from last year.

And I'm on a diet this year - maybe only make a double batch, instead of quadruple as per usual.
But I'll keep my eye out - sometimes they stock holiday specials randomly.

          Sure Nauga,
but they are a sugar overload.

          Choc Marshmallow Cookies

          3 ½ cups flour
          1 tsp baking soda
          1 tsp salt
          1 cup cocoa
          1 cup shortening
          2 cups sugar
          2 eggs
          1 cup milk
          2 tsp vanilla
1 cup chopped nuts – optional
2 dozen large marshmallows – cut in half

          Glaze
Sift 1 cup cocoa and 3 cups powdered sugar together – heat 6 tablespoons water and 2/3 cup of margarine. Blend well.

Make cookies by creaming shortening and sugars, add eggs and vanilla. Mix flour, soda, salt and cocoa separately, and alternate adding milk, and dry ingredients to butter mixture. Add nuts if desired. Drop by spoonfuls on well greased cookie sheets. Bake 8 minutes at 375∙ Remove from oven, and immediately top each cookie with a ½ of a marshmallow, cut side down, and press gently. Bake an additional 4 minutes, then remove from pan to cooling racks and glaze when cool.

This recipe makes approx 5 dozen cookies.

Wild Salmon Chowder, suddenly dissapeared from all stores, they said it was a seasonal item, I sure hope it comes back, I do have some cans left to try and make my own recipe from though...

Another thing that hasn't been back was the Bouillabaisse, wish I knew where else it is being sold.

Sun-dried tomato flavored pasta. I used to get a package of that (in some shape or another), and mix with a package of the pesto pasta. The pesto pasta is still there, but it seems different.

Way back in the old days, I got hooked on Trader Joe's for having Lindt bars for 99c. If you could find them elsewhere, they were $1.89.

    Sat, January 7, 2006 - 9:16 PM
This stuff was great! I loved it, and I couldn't believe how much fiber and protein was crammed into a single serving of pasta! I try not to eat anything with less than 3 grams of fiber per serving as a rule, regardless of total carbs.

Anyway, went in one day and they decided to stop selling the spaghetti. They still sell the rotini, just not spaghetti. :-(

    • Re: Say It Ain't So, Joe!

      Fri, March 3, 2006 - 9:16 AM
the Green Tea Gelato is NOT discoed, but a lot of times the ice cream we get is the ice cream we get. also, at least in my store, the ice cream section is quite unorginised, and (unfortunatly, this does happen) sometimes my fellow employies dont take the time to stock it correctly in the evening. lol, this is to all of you loyal customers...."if you dont see any on the shelf, please ask." we may have some in the back, and for every 1 person that actually does ask, there are 4-5 who wanted it, but assumed we're out. so by you asking, we restock the shelf, and dont make just one sale, but 5-6 sales, and thats good for you (it will keep the item in the store) and us (we get more money! i know it sounds heartless, but keep in mind, we are NOT a nonprofit company. sometimes, we have to make a buisness decision based on what gets us more money). but anyways, the green tea gelato should be there, either on the shelf, or in the back. i know, its good stuff. so's the fresh ginger flavor.

Hi everyone! I just joined! This is a fun thread. Ok, my resurrection wish list:

-Hanson's strawberry-yogurt cereal, circa 2002 (Yum yum yum. The BEST, and I don't even like cereal.)
-Vegetarian parmesan cheese, circa 2003 (Made with vegetable rennet -- do you know how hard it is to find veggie-friendly PARM cheese?!? One of the managers told me years ago they were having issues with the rights or something having to do with the packaging, but that it was supposed to be cleared up "soon." Hasn't happened yet...)
-Green tea hard candies, circa 2001
    -Chocolate chai (powder), circa 2003

This is my main beef with TJ's. I fall in love with something and then they stop carrying it. Guh. Story of my life. : /

They use to sell these bags of very thin pretzel sticks from Israel for $.99. I loved them and bought them for years. When they stopped selling them TJ's brought in a replacement pretzel and the manager tried to tell me was the same brand in a new package. Hey you can't fool a pretzel afficienado. That and the fact that Whole Foods Market started selling that same bag of pretzels for $.50 more.

Then I started eating their oganic pretzel twists. Awhile later they are gone too and being sold at Whole Foods in a smaller bag same price.

Hey TJ's some times it isn't about the money we just want what we like.

Now they stopped selling the frozen potsickers that I grew to love too.

This store is driving me nuts with discontinuing all my favorite items. I am like an addict and then I have to cut off cold turkey. The latest victim is this Red Pepper Spread that was my low-fat solution to put on my wrap sandwiches. I cannot find anything suitable to replace it. A couple of years ago I was hooked on some portabello mushrooms in a jar and they disappeared overnight. Then they yanked away the Soy Vay Chinese Marinade. I did discover Soy Vay changed the name to Hoisin Garlic Asian Glaze, but TJ does not carry it. I can get it at the local grocer for a premium. There are others, but I cannot recall. I guess I should start stocking up on my favorites so that I can hang on to my favorites a bit longer.

the red pepper spread is actually a seasonal item, due to the availabilty of red peppers. Our culture needs to understand that fruits and vegetables are enjoyed at certain times of the year in other countries.

i used to love going to Trader Joe's, I really did, i looked forward to it, was always so happy when i was in the store. bit by bit, they've discontinued many of the things i used to go in for, and now when i shop there i just feel like i'm in another corporate machine, all that great feeling is gone. I wish someone could explain to their pissant bean-counters the value of customer goodwill? maybe you don't make that extra 3¢ margin on this or that product, but guess what, I don't drag TJ virgins to the store anymore, i don't talk it up at parties, and if the subject does come up i am sure to be a prick about it.

but seeing this list of people saying how crushed they were makes me feel a *little* less insane about missing the veggie gyoza. i ate them at least 3x a week. no, not those inedible horrible thai ones in the pretty package filled with plastic-tasting daikon crap, just the plain old store brand, discontinued over a year ago when the vendor bailed. they've had the chicken and pork versions back for months now, massive piles of them, but next to them are just the crappy thai ones.

today's bitchfest is sponsored by the discontinued India Relish, which was an essential part of my tofu sauce, and now I'm wondering if that amazing Olive Tapnade in the jar will come back? those two, plus salsa (arriba fire roasted, from Safeway, great stuff), soy sauce, and...wait for it....chunky peanut butter, what a wonderful combo. no more.

what else do i miss? the garlicky tomato stuff from the cooler, the great flatbread pizzas we can't get on the east coast, the "mostly-unsplit" pea soup (way better than the current stuff), the frozen peaches...and other things I'm just too bitter about to remember.

My local TJs never has anything anymore. When I show up (admittedly late...around 8-ish) it's like a tornado hit the place. Regardless--they stopped making my favorite microwave Toscana bowtie pasta...the absolute BEST thing they ever made. The rest of the stuff I like shows up occasionally, but it appears that the wolves get to it before I show up.

I think their microwave rice bowl things suck--I wish they'd come up with some better microwave dinners since I basically live off of them. They've come up with a few new fish ones (some Salmon thing and a Tilapia one) but they don't really cook properly in the microwave.

I like to think of it positively - I read an article about TJ's, that every month (maybe more, maybe less) they remove the lowest selling 100 items, and bring in 100 new items. It means you get to try new interesting food they have to offer!! The popchips are todiefor! The salt-and-pepper blister peanuts are AWESOME! Try the quick cooking chicken - easy, and yes, QUICK!

I like your positive attitude. I hadn't heard that before about TJ's, but it makes sense. It's a small store as supermarkets go, and it does make it more interesting to have new things come along. Of course I can see it would suck if a favorite isn't regarded as favorite enough by others to warrant keeping around.

I often stop in to Trader Joe's for lunch, not a whole shopping bag full of stuff. I really like their eggplant wraps, lately, I'd be upset if they stopped making them. (Quick, everyone start buying them so they aren't cut :-)

It would be helpful to have a big "100 New Items" board in
the store, so we know what to try.

it would also be nice if they had a "get it while you can" board so we aren't shocked with sudden withdrawal. But this is me not holding my breath on either...

That's a great idea that would go a long way towards reducing customer frustration. But I'm not holding my breath either.

I could swear I saw some veggie gyoza tonight. Maybe I was hallucinating. What I didn't see was the box of Chicken Char Siu Bai that I had come in for. *Sigh*

Of course I'm disappointed, but I don't get mad. I've always thought of Trader Joe's as a little like a Soviet economy: you get what they have and when it's gone, it's gone. That's the way the 5 Year Plan goes.

I think a certain amount of the soul of TJ's has disappeared in recent years, but there's still no way I'd want to live in a part of this country that doesn't have one. I shop at TJ's more than I shop at Safeway or any "normal" grocery store.

I am still devastated that they stopped carry all three flavors of the Curry Thai Tuna. I mean who knew vacuum-packed tuna could be so damn tasty? As you can see I am still bitter about that.
